JEF - Young Europeans united in solidarity for Greece
The European Union is currently facing the worst political-economic crisis since the end of the Second World War. The ongoing economic downturn has constituted a fertile ground for the ascent of extreme right parties in Europe and has also been exploited by populist movements, which did not miss the opportunity to put the whole European project into question.
European Federalists have been arguing for decades now that more European integration is needed since we will be able to face the contemporary challenges of the international system only if we get united in a federal European state.
The results of the last Greek elections clearly reflect the situation described above and have thus sparked discussions about a possible Greek exit from the Eurozone, even the EU as a whole.
JEF-Europe and JEF-Greece fully comprehend the situation of the Greek young people, who face with 51, 2% the highest youth unemployment rate in Europe and above all, are not presented a realistic and pragmatic way out of the crisis. They are facing an uncertain future, footing the bill of previous serious political mistakes on national and European levels.
Taking into consideration Greece’s contribution to the European integration process for the last 31 years as well as the Greek people’s sacrifices and willingness to stay in the EU, JEF-Europe and JEF-Greece are calling on all the Greek political parties to act with responsibility in the upcoming elections and convey to the Greek citizens that the prospect of the country is in the European Union.
Greece and the other EU Member States need to realize that it is high time we moved towards “more Europe” respecting the rights of the citizens and developing a political vision of the EU’s future.
“United in solidarity”, Young European Federalists call the EU to take direct measures to get Europe back to growth and secure the dreams of its youth. “The European youth is united in its wish for a solid and optimistic future. It’s high time for the European decision-makers to do the same”, claims Pauline GESSANT, President of JEF-Europe.
“Greece is a cornerstone and at the heart of the EU. We started together the European idea, we will together make it true as well”, sums up Petros AGGOS, President of JEF-Greece.
